Know Your Numbers
The HHDC serves as Oklahoma’s leader in fighting the diabetes epidemic. To spread its message, the HHDC, in partnership with the College of Pharmacy, is taking its early-intervention campaign, called Know Your Numbers, into communities around the state. According to the state Health Department, more than 12 percent of Oklahomans have been diagnosed with diabetes. 39% of Oklahomans are at risk for developing the disease which is one of the highest diabetes rates in the country. That makes programs like Know Your Numbers essential to improving the health and well being in our state.
What is Know Your Numbers?
Know Your Numbers is a research project designed to educate and inform individuals about their risks for developing diabetes. Blue Cross and Blue Shield has provided the inaugural-year funding for this research project.
How Long Will This Take?
This study consists of one visit which we believe will take about 20-30 minutes to complete, and one optional follow-up phone call three months later to check on your progress toward better health.
What is Involved?
This study consists of a simple finger-stick blood test and filling out two health-related surveys.
What Tests Will be Run?
We will take your weight and height measurements to determine your body mass index (BMI). The blood tests will include: HbA1c (three month average of blood sugars), complete lipid panel (total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, and LDL), and blood sugar. We ask that you come fasting (no food or drink except water for eight hours prior to the study) for best test results.
What Do I Receive?
You will receive your blood test results and get to speak with a certified diabetes educator (CDE) about your numbers and risks for developing diabetes and how to make changes in your lifestyle to improve your health outcomes.
Where Do I Sign-Up for this Study?
We will be taking our show on the road to different locations across the state of Oklahoma. There is no need to sign-up. Just come to any one of our events.
Please check our events calendar for dates and times in locations near you.
